DIY : Easy Oil Cleansing Method

Reading Sarah and Jenny DIY success, I was tempted to try, but stayed away for 2 reasons. One, I am a lazy person, I sit on things till they don’t become absolute necessary. My husband terms this as my ‘launch time’ 😉 And second reason is that I am terrible at following a recipe. Read through and you will know what I mean.

One day I plucked courage and placed my order on SEA. The first item, I wanted to try was Sarah’s Easy Oil Cleansing recipe. So, I referred to her blog and prepared the Easy Oil Cleanser. But only after 2 uses, my skin was all flaky, irritated and dry. I reviewed the ratio I used and what was mentioned on the blog. Oh no!! I had used the oily skin proportions instead of the dry skin. In case you are wondering, I have dry sensitive skin. All kind of expletives were uttered. See, what I meant about my inability to follow a recipe.

Anyways, I took a deep breath and adjusted the proportion so that I achieved the ratio for dry skin. That day, I was glad that I had paid attention to my Maths classes.

Even with the adjusted ratio for dry skin, I was not entirely happy. This, I partially blame to my careless first attempt. After discussion with Sarah on twitter, I reduced proportion of Castor Oil in my mix.

So, now I use following ratio

Polysorbate 80 : Castor Oil : Oil = 2 : 0.25 : 7
Eg: Polysorbate 80 = 8 gm
Castor Oil = 1 gm
Oil = 28 gm

Oil Cleansing Methid

For oil, I have used Rosehip and Jojoba. Once I got the recipe right, I can safely say that it’s the best cleanser I have ever tried. It doesn’t require double cleansing but still removes all makeup, dirt and dead skin. I just warm it within my palm, massage it all over my face and then wash with warm water. It feels so clean without the dry, stretchy feeling. What really, made me a believer was the change in skin on my nose. For longest, I can remember, my nose has been an issue. On its own, it would be oily with dirt trapped in pores and rough skin. I had tried everything from nose strips to exfoliant but nothing worked. I had come to term with it, till I tried this cleanser. After using it for almost 2 months continuously, skin on my nose is relatively better. It’s no longer oily and the pores have cleared too. With skin being cleaner and less dry means that the makeup also sets well. Foundation looks less patchy and make up looks more natural.

After this experience, I am a DIY convert. It’s not very difficult, just needs a bit of attention when following the recipe.
Have you ever DIYed skin care? How was your experience?

Note: Just like everything else, skincare that works for me, may or may not work for others.

Lips Exfoliation

We all know that exfoliation is an important step in skin care routine. Just as we exfoliate the skin on our face and body, lip exfoliation is also needed to get smooth lips. At least, that’s what I think

There are many lip scrubs available in market for this purpose but personally I am not very fond of those. Apart for shelling out extra dollars for something which can be achieved easily, they are harsh for the soft skin on our lips.

So, how do I exfoliate my lips?? All I use is a heavy duty lip balm like Lanolips( I use Dr Lipps) and the trusty, always present q-tip.

Every night before I sleep, I apply tiny amount of Dr Lipps on my lips. What this does is that it softens the dead skin and the flaky bits while moisturising the lips. While washing my face next morning,all I need to do face is to wet the q-tip and move in on my lips in circular motion. This picks up all the dead skin and reveals the soft skin.

Once exfoliated, I follow it with Nivea lip butter.

Soap & Glory Hand Food

The Soap & Glory website describes it as

“Contains shea butter, macadamia oil and marshmallow . Scented with our Original Pink fragrance. the most astonishing hand cream ever? You decide!”

I love the color of the tube. So girly 🙂 . Now to the actual product , it has soft sweet smell and is easily absorbed.  I had once used a perfume which was overly sweet and since then I have always been wary of sweet smelling products. But, after using this I can say that this is no way like that.

Unlike many common hand creams this one has no tackiness and greasiness.I have almost finished the tube and can safely say that I will definitely be buying it again.

It retails for $11.95 AUD and can be bought online from Kit Cosmetics or in store from Myer.

Skincare : Dermalogica Precleanse

There is one fact about my skin which I learnt hard way : oil and my skin don’t agree. Last time I tried using Oil Cleansing Method(OCM) my skin reacted so badly that it looked as if an angry cat has scratched my face.
While getting my face mapped for first time at Dermalogica, I was suggested Precleanse but I didn’t have the courage to use it, not with the condition my skin was in. But, as it calmed down I tried to test waters again by introducing Dermalogica Precleanse in my skincare routine. And believe me, it was the best decision I took.
As mentioned on website
A lightweight Olive and Apricot Kernel-based cleansing oil, fortified with Kukui Nut, Borage Seed and Rice Bran oils, that gently liquefies sebum and oil-based debris from the skin’s surface. The hydrophilic (water-loving) formula enables PreCleanse and oil-based debris to be readily rinsed away without leaving behind any greasy residue. Follow with prescribed Dermalogica Cleanser for a thorough double cleansing. Contains no artificial fragrance or color.
How I Use It:
With this introduced in my skincare regime, I don’t use separate eye makeup remover.
I just take about 20cents size amount in my palm and gently apply it across my eyes to dissolve the makeup. And then I use any remaining amount to gently massage on my cheeks and nose to remove any residual makeup.
Then I take small amount of lukewarm water in my palm, massage it all over my face and wash with plain water which removes all makeup. (When mixed with water it turns in a milky color liquid)
Thereafter, I use my cleanser to double cleanse.

What I think about it:
  •    It loved my skin.
  •   Restored the oil balance in my skin which meant no more dry patches.
  •   Removes makeup really well
  •   Saved me additional step of using eye makeup remover
  •   Added benefit, minimizing blackheads on my nose.
Would I recommend it:
Definitely. If you haven’t tried it, get a sample and give it a try

Winter Skincare Routine

Every winter, I can be found whining about my dry, flaky skin and scouring the department/drugstore for that one magic product which would fix it for me.

But, not this winter.

I had changed by complete skincare routine about 10-11 months ago and now I tweak it based on change in season while keeping the basics same.

Today, I will share with you my daily skincare routine. For reference I have dry, sensitive skin with blackheads on my nose(I know eeww!!)

Morning Skincare

  • Dermalogica UltraCalming Cleanser.
  • Dermalogica UltraCalming Mist. I spritz my face with this after pat drying
  • Dermalogica Total Eye Care cream.
  • Dermalogica Skin Hydrating Booster. I usually take 4-5 drops of its and apply it on my face while my skin is still damp. After this I generally wait for 5 – 10 minutes before the next step.
  • Blossom Kochhar Sunscreen with SPF 30.
  • Aesop Camellia Nut Facial Hydrating Cream as the day cream.

  I wait for 10 minutes after the last step in skincare routine before starting makeup

Evening Skincare

  • Dermalogica Precleanse. I use this to gently remove all my makeup
  • Dermalogica UltraCalming Cleanser
  • Dermalogica UltraCalming Mist
  • Dermalogica Gentle Soothing Booster
  • Dermalogica Skin Hydrating Booster
  • Nivea Creme in blue tub ( I am not sure how to refer to it , but thats how I differentiate)

It might seem to be a lengthy process but its totally worth it. For first time in many winters, dry and flaky skin hasn’t bothered me.
 I plan to review each one of these seperately, so you can expect many skincare review post.

Note: I am not affliated to Dermalogica or being paid by them for this post. All above mentioned products have been bought with yours truly hard earned money.

Tale of Two Oils

Let me tell you a small tale of 2 oils.

Few weeks ago, Mr. M was grinding soup in the mixer when the lid flew open and soup splattered all over the kitchen and him. Soup was right off the stove so it was burning hot and it was all over his face. Fearing serious burns we washed his face with cold water but my first aid box didn’t have any burn ointment.

I quickly ran through my skincare inventory and the first thing I used was Calamine lotion to cool down the heat in the burns. This actually helped cool the burns but we did visit the doctor next day who prescribed burn ointment for 5 days.
Ointment healed the burn but there were real bad scars all over his face.

I again turned to my skincare repertoire for healing the scars. It was hard but I finally managed to convinced Mr. M to use

  • Bio Oil ( for AM)
  • Akin Rosehip Oil ( for PM)

We continued this regime for 6 weeks diligently and now all that is left of the scar is a very faint shadow. In fact Mr. M commented that the scars have considerably reduced and he has observed added benefits

  • Smooth skin
  • No breakouts (he has super oily skin)
  • Glowing complexion

Mr. M is rarely impressed by anything, but when he commented on the positive changes, I silently thanked the 2 oils and applauded myself for having them.
I think, he is loving it so much that he might not his back on this regime.

I apologize for lack of photographic evidence, but Mr. M was not very cooperative with idea of photoshoots ( husbands !!!)

Trilogy Rose Hand Cream

Trilogy Rose Hand cream

I am a sucker for hand creams. I buy them quicker than what I can use. In one my recent trips to pharmacy I was wandering around when I tested Trilogy Rose Hand Cream. Although I didn’t buy it then but I very soon made another trip again to pick it up.

Texture: It’s nice and creamy. It almost melts in your hand when you start rubbing in.

: As the name suggests it smells like roses. Not too strong or too light. Its just sits right

What I like about it :
-> Its very hydrating
-> Its good value for money
-> Love the smell of roses
-> And hold your breath for this one…its not at all greasy. Seriously you can apply it and start typing right away. No greasy sticky feeling after that.

What I don’t like about it:

Would I buy it again: Absolutely. I will get it for my mother when I meet her next.

Its a Month today

It was exactly 4 weeks, on Monday, when I had walked in David Jones with my skin in disaster. It was dry,stretchy, cracking and red bumps which felt hot. My skin was not in happy condition for few days and the stay over at friends place pushed it over the brink. I was so desperate and frustrated with my skin that I was ready to go any length to fix it.

And, with determined stride in my steps , I walked and stopped at Dermalogica counter. Now, the reason why I stopped there was cause my friend who has severe acne with dry skin( and yes that possible !!) uses Dermalogica.I thought, if it works for her then it should work for me as well.

As the beauty therapist was busy with some other client , I waited ( mind it this was on a lunch break, which highlights how desperate I was). Once she came over, she quickly analyzed my skin, did a face mapping and said “You have dry,dehydrated sensitive skin”. She showed me the following products and did a quick application as well.

-> Ultra Calming Cleanser

-> Ultra Calming Mist

-> Gentle Soothing Booster

-> Ultra Sensitive Face Block spf 25

It felt better with first application and I could see that the redness had diminished.As a result, I bought them ( they broke my makeup budget for the month!!!)

Also the therapist had suggested to buy Skin Hydrating Booster later, which I picked this weekend. Quite happy till now

But, boy oh boy, they really work….I mean they are gems….
My skin has never felt better.All red bumps are gone, dryness is controlled and I feel confident without makeup!!! In fact Mr.M commented “Your skin is glowing. I think it was money well spent”.
And my little sister said “Oh, you have got skin just like me”

I do the following
-> Clean the face
-> Spray Ultra Calming Mist
-> Apply the Gentle Soothing Booster
-> Apply any face block (AM)
-> Apply any moisturizer (PM)

As if all the compliments were not proof enough, a little story over the weekend sealed my love for Dermalogica. My facial skin can’t stand oil.Period. I had applied hand cream which had olive oil and while sleeping had rested my face on my hands.Boom!! I wake up in morning with five red bumps on cheek. I was like ‘Yikes!!’.
But,then I followed my usual routine with Dermalogica products and woke up with nice baby soft skin..all bumps gone.

I wanted to share this with you guys earlier, but I thought to complete 4 weeks before I talked about it.

For past few days I am been thinking “Why didn’t I start using Dermalogica earlier”

Is there any products which makes you think the same ???

Dior skincare for Combination Dry skin

Hey guys ( incase some one reads this )….I am really sorry for gone missing for so many days..So I am back with few posts.

As mentioned earlier, I have combination dry skin and as winter starts approaching, my skin just stops to cooperate. I start having flakey skin, redness on cheek, tight and parched skin. No amount of drinking water, moisturising would help me.

And thats when I chanced upon this beauty

Dior Hydra Action

Now, to the story how I found this gem. At my work we would be having weekly meeting in evening and there was this woman , who must be beyond 50 but her it was to die for. So fresh , plump and she had the best skin I have seen ( except for my mom’s). So, what did I do, walked up to her and asked her “So, what do you use?”. And pat came the reply, Dior skincare. I rushed to the Dior counter at my department store and asked the SA to suggest the right products for me.

Now, this SA was a gem. She sat me down, asked my skin concerns and gave me generous samples of Dior HydraAction Serum and Creme Sorbet. I tried them for a week and my skin was really happy, which prompted me to buy the full size products.

I have been using this for over 1 month now and skin is so moisturised and fresh. Infact, now I can dare to go to work without any makeup. Infact, one of the mornings, my better half, commented “Your skin is looking just so great. Its almost as if you have applied makeup”. Hearing this I , silently thanked my colleague and Dior Hyrdaction.

The only downside is that its very expensive, but then it lasts. I have been using this for over 1 month and I have hardly used anything.

I think I will try more of Dior products. Loved it.

So, Bye Till Next Time !!!

P.S : I also got as gift with the purchase, would be covering it in different post

Can’t Sing Enough Praises

Let me start with telling that I have dry combination skin (oily on nose) and very sensitive skin. Slightest change in weather or increased stress level my skin starts playing up. Just when I was I was finding difficult to mositurise and soothe my skin , I came across a post by Stefanie. Her reviews are the best and most genuine. I had been following her for sometime and had faith on her reviews. Based on her experience, I went and bought the jars for ‘Aloe Soothing Day Cream’ and ‘Aloe Soothing Night Cream’

I started using it regularly, coupled with exfoliator from the same range. And my God, it worked wonders, my skin would be always moisturised without being greasy. The best thing about this was that it would be absorbed right away.

If I had to pick just one of the 2, I would pick the night cream. Its the best that I have ever used, very light , incredibly moisturising and I wake up with baby soft skin. It was so good that I got my entire family hooked on to it 🙂

On a side note, I am watching ‘Deception’ right now…and its just getting interesting now.

Bye Till Next time !!!!
